How can you define architecture? If you ask many architects, they might describe it in terms of style or purpose. But if you really want to get to the heart of what architecture is, you’ll need to look at its elements, the crucial components that make up every building and structure on earth (and beyond). These are the five essential elements of architecture: space, form, line, color, and texture. To create buildings that last, it’s important to understand how each of these elements works individually and how they interact with one another to create something beautiful and sustainable.

Setting

Every great work of architecture is set within a specific location. This setting can be natural, like a mountainside or a riverfront, or it can be man-made, like a city street or park. The setting provides the backdrop against which the architectural elements will be seen.

Shape & Form

Architects use shape and form to create pleasing compositions. In nature, we see perfect examples of how shapes can be combined to create harmony. The human body is also an excellent example of how different shapes can be combined to create a whole that is more than the sum of its parts.
In architecture, shape and form are often used to create contrast. For example, a round window in a square room creates interest and visual tension. The way that light interacts with the forms also affects the overall composition. Light can highlight certain features and make them pop out or it can make forms appear to recede into the background.

Materials

The first element of architecture is materials. The most common building materials are wood, concrete, and steel. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to choose the right material for your project. For example, wood is a great insulator but it’s not as strong as concrete.

Perspective

In its simplest form, architecture is the design of buildings and other structures. But there’s more to it than that. To create a truly great work of architecture, there are five essential elements that must be considered: perspective, space, form, light, and material. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Light and Shadow

One of the most essential elements of architecture is light. Without light, there can be no shadow, and without shadow, there can be no depth or dimension. Light and shadow play off each other to create a sense of depth and space. Without light, everything would appear two-dimensional.
